Ahhh… the first date. A mixed bag of butterflies, excitement, and the “omg what should we do on the first date?!” questions. If you’re anything like me, you want to plan the cutest first date that shows off your creativity and sense of adventure. I’ve come up with my favorite outdoor date ideas in NYC to share with you. Depending on your interests — and adventure level — plan your ideal first date with these fun, outdoor activities that will help you get to know your date and (hopefully) have a memorable time. Let me know how it goes! Spoiler alert: All of these ideas are great for hangouts with friends too.

  1. Walkthrough the High Line.

One of NYC’s newest and most popular parks, the High Line is a historical and hip first date idea. Take in great views of the West Side of NYC with your date by your side. If it’s going well, stop and have a drink, or a bite, at one of the many nearby bars and restaurants. Note: There’s a free timed-entry reservation system, and limited capacity for social distancing, to ensure your safety. Click here to learn more and plan your date today!

  2. Kayak the Hudson River.

I love this idea because it’s an active and unique way to engage with a first date! Obviously, this is for the more adventure-y types. It’s also a really fun activity to do with friends during the warmer months in NYC. Learn more about how to kayak the Hudson from Pier 26 in Tribeca here.

  3. Go on a Brunch Cruise with Classic Harbor Line.

I guarantee your date won’t have gone on a brunch cruise around NYC before. Or if they have, this is still a super cute and romantic date idea! Classic Harbor Line is my go-to and they just started offering their iconic brunch cruises this April. Sip a mimosa while sipping in gorgeous views of the Big Apple. Your date will be impressed! 4. Try Hiking at Van Cortlandt Park.

For the more outdoorsy, athletic types, I recommend heading out for a hike at Van Cortlandt Park up in the northwest Bronx. Fun fact? This is actually NYC’s largest park (not Central Park!). Explore its over one thousand acres of ridges, valleys, playing fields, and forests. Plus, the park is home to the country's first public golf course, the oldest house in the Bronx, and the borough's largest freshwater lake.

  5. Enjoy the Fun, Sand, and Rides at Coney Island.

It doesn’t get more New York than Brooklyn’s iconic Coney Island. This is a great first date idea because you have so many activities to choose from: Walk on the beach, have fun in the sand, go on some roller coaster rides, check out the Aquarium, or go for some Russian food and vodka down the boardwalk if you’re feeling super adventurous! 6. Relax Amidst Lush Greenery at New York’s Botanical Garden.

Enjoy the peace and nature of the Botanical Garden on your first date. Wander the grounds, see cherry blossoms in full bloom, and check out seasonal shows, like the Orchid Show. Bring a picnic, or grab a bite in the sunshine at their restaurant. Being immersed in this peaceful oasis is a great way to get some downtime with someone on a first date! Plan your visit here.

  7. Go Surfing at Rockaway Beach.

For active swimmers and outdoorsy lovers, try surfing at Rockaway Beach! Start your adventure together by riding the waves and enjoying an amazing outdoor activity, just 45 minutes from the city! Click here for a list of surf lessons.

  8. Cruise on the Staten Island Ferry.

Going for a cruise on the Staten Island Ferry is a fun way to see the sights and set sail for the price of a mere subway ticket! The crossing takes about 20 minutes. Grab a beer onboard and take in stunning views of the Statue of Liberty and downtown Manhattan. If it’s going well, get off and explore Staten Island together! Click here for departure schedules.

  9. Discover Houston Bowery Art Wall.

Explore this expansive outdoor art display, made famous by Keith Haring in the late 1970s. Displaying established and emerging artists whose art sends a message of hope, this wall is not to be missed! It’s located in the trendy downtown neighborhood on the border of Soho and Noho with tons of great restaurants, bars, and shopping nearby.

After your outdoor date, head to one of these charming restaurants where you can safely eat outside in NYC.
