Fun Budget-Friendly Must-Do Activities in Philadelphia

Rich in history, art, and delicious eats, Philadelphia is a great getaway for a frugal traveler. Take in the sights without having to empty your pockets — this city is full of fun free things to do! Here are some of the best things to do in Philly that won't hurt your wallet.

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens

  1. Throw a photoshoot at Philadelphia's Magic Gardens

If traditional art museums aren't your thing, put this mosaic-masterpiece at the top of your Philly activities list. Constructed out of recycled glass bottles, broken mirrors, and more, the Philadelphia Magic Gardens is a whimsical art installation located in the trendy South Street area. Created by Isaiah Zagar in the 1960s, visitors are allowed to touch and photograph everything this decorative space, making it the perfect photo opp to fill your IG feed.

  2. Walk the food stalls of Reading Terminal Market

When coming to Philly, a big appetite is crucial, especially at the Reading Terminal Market. Walkthrough one of the oldest open markets in the nation, and you'll find that it's quite easy to satisfy any craving in this culinary wonderland. From posh eateries and local street food to quirky dive bars and indulgent sweets, the possibilities are endless.

  3. Visit a national treasure at The Liberty Bell Center

Get up close and personal with this great symbol of American history. The Liberty Bell is one of the most popular free attractions in Philadelphia, and its world-famous crack is worth seeing. While there are no tickets or fees for this attraction, keep in mind that long wait times can occur during the busier seasons.

  4. Make a stop at the LOVE Sculpture

There's no better representation of the City of Brotherly Love than Robert Indiana's LOVE sculpture. Installed at the John F. Kennedy Plaza in 1976 for the U.S. Bicentennial, this iconic pop art sign is a Philly must-see.

  5. Get an unforgettable history lesson at Independence Hall

The birthplace of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution is just a short walk from the Liberty Bell. Visitors can enjoy guided tours given by park rangers and get a glimpse into America's fascinating past. While admission is free, tickets are required and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

  6. Make time for playtime at Franklin Square

While there is an endless amount of beautiful parks in Philadelphia, Franklin Square is guaranteed fun. Perfect for kids (and big kids at heart), this park features a classic carousel, mini-golf, and snack bar. The newest attraction to see is the seasonal Franklin Square Fountain show, which displays water spraying and soaring in the air, in sync with the music and colorful lights in the evening. The shows run daily every 30 minutes from 12-2 PM and 6 PM till closing, with the season-ending Oct. 31st.
