Day 1: Iconic Landmarks of Porto – Dom Luís I Bridge and Porto Cathedral

  • Dom Luís I Bridge – This iconic double-deck bridge is a must for anyone visiting Porto. Walking across it gave me one of the best views of Porto’s riverside. Make sure to go at sunset when the city skyline glows in golden hues — and bring your camera, the shots are incredible!

  • Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto) – One of Porto’s oldest landmarks, this Romanesque-Gothic cathedral combines centuries-old architecture with panoramic views of the city. The terrace outside is perfect for soaking in Porto’s rooftops and winding streets from above.

Insider Tip: Explore the area around the Cathedral early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy a peaceful start to your trip.

Day 2: Porto’s Culinary Highlights – Francesinha, Majestic Café, and Pastel de Nata

Porto’s food scene blew me away with its mix of historic spots and local favorites.

  • Francesinha Sandwich – Porto’s famous sandwich is a hearty mix of ham, sausage, steak, and melted cheese, drenched in a rich, spicy beer-based sauce.

  • Majestic Café – An absolute must-visit for a coffee lover. This iconic café feels like a step back in time with its chandeliers and mirrors. Perfect for an indulgent breakfast or afternoon coffee break. I visited during the late afternoon (and yes, there were long waiting lines!).

  • Pastel de Nata – The custard tarts from Castro, Natas D’Ouro, and Manteigaria were some of the best I’ve ever had. Flaky, creamy, and perfectly caramelized, these little treats are a highlight of any trip to Porto!

Day 3: Exploring Porto’s Blue Tiles and Artistry – São Bento Station and Livraria Lello

Porto’s artistry is evident in its azulejos, or hand-painted tiles, which cover everything from train stations to churches.

  • São Bento Station – Known for its 20,000+ azulejos that depict scenes from Portuguese history, this station is like a gallery you can walk through. I loved spending time here, just taking it all in.

  • Church of Saint Ildefonso – This beautiful 18th-century church, covered in blue and white tiles, is a real showstopper. The tiled façade tells stories of saints and city history, making it a must-see for art lovers.

  • Livraria Lello – This is one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores, with its neo-Gothic design and fairytale staircase. It’s not hard to see why it’s rumored to have inspired scenes in Harry Potter!

Insider Tip: Visit Livraria Lello early to avoid the long lines, or opt for a timed entry ticket to skip the wait.

Day 4: Riverside Vibes and Wine Tasting – Ribeira and Gaia

Porto’s riverside neighborhood, Ribeira, is one of the city’s most charming areas.

  • Ribeira District – Colorful houses, cobbled streets, and lively cafés line this beautiful riverside district. It’s the perfect place for a relaxed stroll and some people-watching by the water.

  • Vila Nova de Gaia – Just across the river from Porto, Gaia is home to the city’s famous Port wine cellars. I toured Taylor’s and Graham’s, where I learned about Port wine’s rich history while sampling several varieties. If you want to reach Gaia with a view, hop on the Teleférico de Gaia (Gaia cable car). 🍷

Day 5: Seaside Escape – Foz do Douro and Porto’s Brunch Scene

After days of exploring, a seaside escape to Foz do Douro was the perfect way to unwind.

  • Foz do Douro – Here, the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean, creating a peaceful spot with scenic views, lighthouses, and quiet beaches. It’s a lovely place to spend a morning away from the city center.

  • Camélia - Brunch Garden – This cozy brunch spot quickly became one of my favorites. With fresh pastries, artisanal coffees, and a lovely garden setting, it was the ideal place to wrap up my Porto adventure.

Insider Tip: Foz do Douro can be reached by tram from Porto’s center, making it an easy day trip for a relaxing escape from the city.

Porto Travel Tips for a Smooth Trip

Porto’s beauty shines through in every neighborhood, but a few practical tips made my trip even better:

  • Comfortable Shoes Are a Must: Porto’s hilly terrain and cobblestone streets are beautiful but challenging. Make sure you’re prepared!

  • Getting Around: Porto’s metro, trams, and buses make it easy to explore without a car, though renting one can be useful if you plan to visit spots outside the city.

  • Pack for Unpredictable Weather: Especially in the fall, Porto can be rainy, so a light rain jacket and umbrella are always good to have on hand.
