From Corporate Life to The White House: A Milestone in My Creator Journey

As my plane touched down in NYC from St Lucia, I was casually scrolling through emails, not expecting much beyond the usual updates. But then I saw it: an invitation to the Holiday Reception at The White House.

My heart stopped — click for a video of my reaction!

I reread the email, trying to process what I was seeing. Me? Invited to The White House? As a creator? I nearly jumped out of my seat right there on the plane. This moment wasn’t just surreal; it was monumental. It felt like a full-circle moment for the younger version of me who dared to dream big but never imagined this could be possible.

The Leap That Changed Everything

For those who don’t know, I wasn’t always a creator. I spent years climbing the corporate ladder in a successful, stable career. But something inside me kept whispering that there was more out there for me — a life that aligned with my passions and values.

So, I took the leap.

Leaving corporate America wasn’t easy. I gave up a lucrative career and the security that came with it to pursue an idea of success that felt truer to me. I combined my love for culture, travel, haircare, and storytelling into a brand that helps people embrace their natural beauty while exploring the world. I started sharing curly hair tutorials, skincare tips, and travel guides — not knowing where it would lead.

The Challenges Along the Way

What no one tells you about chasing your dreams is how often you’ll battle self-doubt. Imposter syndrome has been a constant companion on this journey. There were moments when I wanted to quit when I questioned if I was cut out for this, or if I had made the biggest mistake of my life leaving corporate.

But every small win kept me going. From growing a supportive community to landing meaningful partnerships, each milestone became a reminder that I was on the right path.

This year, I leaned into my vision like never before. I focused on building community, stepping into more speaking engagements, and collaborating with brands that truly aligned with my values. Slowly but surely, those efforts began to add up.

Representation Matters

As I reflect on this invitation to The White House, I can’t help but think of younger me. The girl who didn’t see people who looked like her in these spaces. The girl who dreamed of big things but wasn’t always sure they were possible.

This moment is for her.

Being here as an Afro-Latina creator feels bigger than just me. It’s about representation, about showing others what’s possible when you bet on yourself and lean into your vision. I’m so proud to be the kind of representation that younger me would have been proud to see.

Why This Moment Matters

This isn’t which side of the political spectrum you’re on. It’s about stepping into your beliefs, owning your journey, and staying true to your purpose.

The fact that The White House recognized me as a creator and the creator economy as a whole, speaks volumes about how far the creator economy has come. It’s a sign that this industry is being taken seriously, and that the stories we tell and the communities we build matter.

A Message for You

To anyone reading this who’s unsure about taking that leap — I see you. I’ve been there. And I’m here to tell you that betting on yourself is worth it. The journey won’t always be easy, but the rewards are greater than you can imagine.

To my community, mentors, brand partners, and loved ones: thank you. Whether you’ve cheered me on publicly or supported me quietly, you’ve been part of this journey, and I wouldn’t be here without you. This recognition is as much a reflection of your support as it is of my work.

Looking Ahead

This invitation isn’t the end of the journey — it’s only the beginning. And it’s a reminder of what’s possible when you push through the doubt and keep going. It’s about stepping into purpose, being proud of the work you’ve done, and inspiring others to dream big.

Younger me would have never believed this was possible. But here I am, proof that it is.

To everyone who’s been part of this story, thank you for believing in me.

With so much gratitude,
Jessica 💛
